What Is the We Honor Veterans Program?

Our veterans can face different and extreme health issues. During wartime, the main health concerns are life-threatening and disabling injuries, including shrapnel and gunshot wounds, lost limbs, and head injuries. Service members might also have health problems from exposure to environmental hazards such as contaminated water, chemicals, and infections.

Deployment-related health conditions can include:

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Gulf War illness
  • Hearing difficulties
  • Malaria
  • Memory loss
  • Migraines
  • Medically unexplained physical symptoms
  • Traumatic amputation
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Tuberculosis
  • Sleep disorders
  • Leishmaniasis
  • Hepatitis A, B, and C

Service members and veterans are also at risk for mental health conditions, including anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance abuse.

We Honor Veterans, a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), recognizes the unique needs of America’s veterans and their families to help guide them through their life stories toward a more peaceful ending. Our goal is to ensure our veterans and their families receive the profound benefit of hospice care tailored to them.

This philosophy of hospice care focuses on improving quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Hospice is also a vital support system in helping family caregivers manage the details and emotional challenges of caring for their loved ones. Agape Care recognizes the unique needs of our veterans who are facing advanced illness and works to provide the care, support, and comfort they need to live more fully during the time that remains.

Agape Care wants to ensure that, as hospice providers, we are meeting the needs of this heroic population. We’re reaching out to our veteran population to understand and recognize their unique needs. We’re also working to learn how to serve veterans as they face challenges stemming from illness, isolation, or traumatic life experience. Our goal is to ensure our veterans and their families receive the profound benefits of hospice, have hospice care tailored to their needs, and gain a peaceful and enriched end-of-life experience.
